Can Barbeque and Meat Worsen Your Acne?

Can Barbeque and Meat Worsen Your Acne?

This is not the first time that a food is being blamed for breakouts and acne. We know how disheartening it is, especially when you are a foodie and a diehard fan of meat and barbeque.

Although any linkage between acne and diet has been denied by researchers time and again, however, it would not be wrong to conclude that barbeque and meat might not trigger acne, but can definitely make the situation worse if you are acne-prone.

How pork and beef could affect your acne?

These two foods, in addition to satisfying your taste buds, also tend to increase the insulin levels in your body which then leads to the inflammation and ultimately results in breakouts and acne. Further, since meats are acid-forming foods, they tend to make your body’s pH a bit acidic which promotes inflammation, and thereby the acne.

So, how would you know if meat and barbeque is the actual reason behind your acne?

There is no standard remedy for all. A certain food which triggered acne in you might be completely harmless to your friend. Thus, the only way you can conclude if barbeque and meat are making your acne worse is to test it yourself.

Begin by eliminating these foods from your diet completely for about a few weeks (preferably more than a month) and see if there are any positive results.

After this, try adding these foods into your diet again and see if this made your acne worse.

What can you do about this?

  • Be choosy  - Not all meats are bad. Thus, to stay safe, make sure that your meat choices are not promoting inflammation. If you love eating red meat, it is highly recommended to choose grass-fed cow meat as it has the correct ratio of Omega-6s and is not found to enhance inflammation. You can also choose organic chicken but avoid to eat the skin and fat parts.
  • Prefer to eat fish rich in omega 3 - Omega 3 can be found in salmon, trout, herring and sardines. Omega 3 is converted by the body into gamma-linoleic acid (GLA) and provides a basis for prostaglandin synthesis. These prostaglandins lower blood pressure, help the metabolism of water (moisturize the skin), decrease inflammation (also those of your skin), improve nerve and immune function and help balance blood sugar.
  • Eat lots of fruits and vegetables - This is because fruits and vegetables are loaded with antioxidants which guard your skin against inflammation and lower the insulin levels.
  • Avoid eating the spicy and oily sauce - Let’s admit, what a meat is without a spicy sauce? But, if you want to prevent your acne from getting any worse, and do not want to give up on meat, then at least avoid eating spicy sauce as it contains a lot of fats and salts than what are actually required by our body, and lead to breakouts.
  • Drink a lot of water - This goes without saying – whether you consume meat or not, let’s make it a point to drink lots of water. It neutralizes the build-up of toxins in your body, while also providing you a clear and healthy skin.
  • Cut back on alcohol - If pairing your favorite meat with a glass of alcohol is your idea of having a perfect meal, you might need to bring about a change and cut alcohol from your diet. In addition to being harmful to your overall health, alcohol is super sugary and can exacerbate your acne, to say the least!
