There is a raging debate between parents, teens and often professionals around whether or not to pop your pimples. People try to catch them early, others let them develop so they are easy to get at, but you have heard it here first, popping pimples really is as bad for your skin as the experts say it is.
As our other acne based blogs have suggested acne is an inflammation of the skin and a pimple can derive from a blocked pore. With our busy daily lives these pores can become blocked ever so easily with excess sebum, dead skin cells, bacteria and often pus, I know gross right?! But seemingly overnight you wake up in the morning and see this big spot or pimple staring back at you in the mirror. Something takes a hold of us from this point onwards, almost as if the pimple is asking to be popped or squeezed and we feel compelled to listen to it.
However, if we can recommend some DIY tips for you to take home remember this for starters, you must be aware of what is happening underneath the skin. If there is already a spot or pimple visible to you at this point, asking to popped well it’s safe to say that the pore is already inflamed, swollen and bearing the weight of bacteria and other pressures.
By placing your (possibly) dirty fingers and finger nails onto the pimple to squeeze it you are simply adding fuel to the fire. Furthermore you could even be forcing all the clogged up bacteria and dead skin cells etc. deeper down into the follicle. And we don’t mean to scare you but further dangers can be that the follicle wall can ultimately rupture, leaking all the infected debris further into the inner skin sections, not good!
I know a lot of us try different techniques to get rid of the pimple, in the shower, coaxing pus and bacteria out of the pore gently with fingernails, sharp instruments or by talking to it nicely but unfortunately this won’t help. You are at risk of pushing the infected debris deeper into the dermis below.
Sometimes we actually think “I did it”, and you walk away from the bathroom proud that you have taken on the pimple and won. However, have you noticed that very often the damaged area of skin comes back with vengeance, redder and more swollen than before, or even have two pimples this time? Well this is not your mind playing tricks on you this is because you have squeezed the damage skin and the infection has reappeared in another area or worsened, and that’s just what you can see on the surface.
Prematurely popping or squeezing a spot or pimple may well leave a scab and an area of healing of some form. This is especially the case if you try and ‘catch’ a spot before it’s at it’s worse, such as before it has a whitehead. This again is a ‘no, no’ as doing that can cause a pimple to mutate into a more serious type of blemish with a hard, red and painful imperfection deep within the skin.
Blemishes can evolve when further damage has occurred or left untreated by our eagerness to squeeze them. A more serious form is acne cysts, these large and painfully inflamed abrasions on the skin create a soft, fluid-filled lump. Unfortunately Cysts, in this case, must be treated by a doctor.
Popping and squeezing spots and pimples is your ‘go to’ action if you want to create longer term effects such as scarring of the skin and having the dreaded ‘acne scars’. Each time your skin is damaged, infected, grazed or scratched there is a chance that when the skin heals some skin cells and tissue will be lost. This is how acne scars form as replacement skin or signs of healing, and of course the bigger the damage caused to the skin the bigger tissue loss, ultimately causing bigger scars and healing marks.
Picking up spot treatment from the shelves doesn’t always fill us with confidence that this particular potion is not filled with chemicals, perfumes and foreign agents. The hope is that we have already instilled a ‘hands off’ approach to skin treatment and indirectly saved you from purchasing a bottle that probably can’t be recycled yet, but what can we do instead?!
There are safer ways to get rid of individual pimples and spots on the skin surface. DIY treatments can include using Apple cider vinegar. Yes I know, bear with me on this. Apple cider vinegar is made by fermenting apple cider; this is known for its ability to fight many types of bacteria and viruses. So much so that some research has suggested that succinic acid within this fermentation process has been shown to suppress inflammation caused by acne and can prevent scarring. After cleansing mix one part vinegar and three parts water and apply the mixture to the skin using a cotton wool, rinse off 20 to 30 seconds later. Apply more often if needed or reduce the water content to make it more potent.
Furthermore you can try moisturising with Aloe Vera as this tropical plant produces a clear gel which is commonly used to treat abrasions, rashes, burns and other skin conditions. However, when applied to the skin, the salicylic acid and sulfur properties go to work on the direct treatment of acne. Try to obtain the most natural and raw aloe Vera as possible to avoid any form of chemical or manufactured contamination. Use this natural anti-inflammatory directly on the infected areas each day.
